SVT Play
SVT is a public service broadcaster that makes television about everyone, for everyone. It operates independently of political, commercial and other interests in society. In 2015, 22 884 hours were broadcast on SVT's channels.
Challenge
SVT turned to Omegapoint for expertise when they wanted to build a public video platform that could scale with good performance. No one had previously built an application of this type in Sweden and there was no standard for how it would work. The latter is a big challenge for SVT, which often has high peaks in usage for major events such as the Olympics, World Cup football, elections or dramatic news.
Solution
Omegapoint was assigned several key expert roles, including system designer and lead developer. The project was to develop a customised solution that would integrate with the underlying CMS (Content Management System) via a web services layer.
The design had to meet SVT's high standards for user experience, accessibility for disabled people and good performance under high loads.
Result
SVT Play has won several prizes and received a number of awards, including the Swedish Design Award "Design S" with the motivation "A role model for Swedish service companies. A pioneering style-setter with a strong focus on utility and speed." SVT Play is today probably Sweden's best play service and was the service that coined the term play for video related services online in Sweden. http://svtplay.se/. The project is a fantastic success.
