Our effort
Omegapoint has been working with Volvo Cars (VCC) for several years on the development of apps for VCC's infotainment system, initially as a pure resource reinforcement in the customer's project and on the customer's premises. During this time, we built up valuable expertise in both business domain and development tools while a mutual trust grew. When VCC decided in spring 2015 to outsource parts of the work to a partner, the choice fell on Omegapoint.
"We were initially quite reluctant to outsource work because we had less successful experiences with it in the past. With Omegapoint, we felt we had a competent, reliable and long-term partner," says Niclas Gyllenram, then Head of Infotainment & Apps at VCC.
Since autumn 2015, we have a team based in Omegapoint's premises, working in close cooperation with the other teams based at VCC.
"Simply put, VCC has chosen to place one of its development teams on our premises and staff the team with consultants from us," says Peo Strand, Business Manager at Omegapoint.
"The most important success factors are that the work is done in a completely agile way and that we have a very close dialogue with the customer. Their Product Owner (PO) sits with us at least a couple of days a week. Another crucial factor is that there is a high degree of mutual trust," Peo continues.
"I agree, proximity is very crucial in many ways. Communication is facilitated because everyone can get to know each other in a better way than if we were sitting further apart. We also do some joint activities where all the teams get together to share experiences and at the same time make some contacts. This helps to create a sense of 'we' among all the people working in the teams." Says Lars Prsa, PO at VCC
The work includes everything from designing the apps to developing and testing them. Testing is done partly on rigs (simulators) and partly by being out and about in real cars. Exactly which apps we are working on is confidential, but they are both pure entertainment apps and information apps linked to the navigation system. A big part of the challenge is to make the best use of the hardware and the specific car experience, and many of the apps are country-specific.
The cooperation with VCC has worked well throughout and the customer is satisfied with our work. This is proven by the fact that we have continued to be trusted. We are now in the third year of our cooperation and we look forward to continue working with VCC Infotainment in the future.
